AUSSIE World has moved to distance itself from the financial woes of the failed Melbourne businessman behind the themed Ettamogah pubs.
The Palmview attraction’s general manager, David Thompson, said this morning that its Ettamogah pub had nothing to do with the liquidation proceedings launched against Leigh O’Brien.
Mr Thompson said Aussie World only paid Mr O’Brien a small royalty fee and it was “business as usual”.
“We’re totally separate. We’re an independently owned hotel,” he said.
“And if you looked up our records, (you would find) we’re very financially sound.”
Liquidator David Ross, from Hall Chadwick, said he did not have a claim on any of the four Ettamogah pubs around Australia.
Mr O’Brien, who also created the Wakkaville and Li'l Larrikins children’s cartoon television series, allegedly owes more than $9 million.
Aussie World management said it was actually putting $2 million into expanding the tourist attraction.
The expansion includes three new fun rides, the first one Giant Redback opened Easter 2011, the second ride The Giant Slide will open shortly and third ride, yet to be formally named, will open later this year and will be the first of its kind on the Sunshine Coast.
Mr Thompson said the purchase of these new attractions would entice more visitors to come to the Sunshine Coast and to stay for longer.
“Due to our management principles and unique diversity of the complex, such as being the largest off site function venue on the Coast, we are successfully forging ahead and are able to make this significant investment,” he said.
“We will also remain an affordable and fun day out by not increasing our gate entrance prices.”
The three new rides will enhance the current six function areas and 30 rides and attractions on site, which include the Town Hall, The Shed, Giant Redback, Wild Mouse Rollercoaster, Ferris Wheel, Rock n Roll Rebel Dark Ride, Dodgem Cars and Side Show Alley.
